When I began my deeper study of yoga, and the Yoga Sutras, I was introduced to the principle of continual practice daily (Yoga Sutra 1.14). In my mind, at this point in my life, I thought it to mean performing a full asana practice everyday—Sun Salutations, standing postures, balancing poses, seated stretches, inversions, and shavasana.

Yoga Sutra 1.14: What Daily Practice Looks Like for Me

I began berating myself when I did not make it to my mat for my full hour of practice. This practice that brought me joy, helped me to connect with my body and my breath, allowed me to feel strong and powerful no matter how I looked in the mirror, suddenly became daunting and stressful.

It has not been until recently (the past few years) that I’ve shifted my beliefs about this Yoga Sutra.

So, how has this shift taken shape?

My daily, consistent practice has become going for a 10-minute walk outside without my phone, allowing space and breath before response, listening to the messages my body is sending me, finding gratitude daily. If I can practice these things daily, consistently, without pause, I lay down in my bed at night feeling more at peace.

May your practice continue.

Peace and wellness to you.
